On New Year's Eve 1853, natural-history artist Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins hosted scientists and Crystal Palace officials inside the mold of an Iguanodon sculpture. The models opened in 1854 as the world's first full-scale dinosaur reconstructions. They look wonderfully wrong now because their makers had only scraps of fossil evidence; Iguanodon was built like a giant four-legged lizard, with its thumb spike planted on its nose. Paleontology's first big launch dinner happened inside a beautiful mistake.
