Biomolecular analysis of hairy covers from French Cistercian manuscripts identified North Atlantic seal skin. The protective chemises wrapped books from Clairvaux Abbey and related communities, connecting quiet monastic libraries to much wider northern exchange networks. The skins reveal movement, but not a complete itinerary: they may have traveled through trade, tribute, or another chain nobody recorded.
