Conservators working on artefacts from Cape Adare found a roughly century-old Huntley & Palmers fruitcake still wrapped in paper inside the remains of a badly corroded tin. It probably travelled south with the Northern Party of Robert Falcon Scott's 1910–1913 Terra Nova expedition. The metal had suffered. The cake had not: the Antarctic Heritage Trust said it remained in excellent condition and looked and smelled almost edible. After conservation, the permit required the cake and its fellow artefacts to return to the historic site. Antarctica had accidentally invented the world's strictest cake tin.
