In Nantes, France, a colossal creature roams the former shipyards, but it’s not what you’d expect. The Grand Éléphant, a mechanical marvel, towers at 12 meters high, resembling a four-story house on the move. This wood-and-steel pachyderm carries up to 50 passengers, offering them a perspective like no other—floating above the cityscape from its fourth-floor vantage point.

Constructed from 48.4 metric tons of tulip poplar and basswood, the Grand Éléphant is a testament to human ingenuity. Its gentle pace of 1 to 3 km/h allows riders to soak in the surroundings, guided by the rhythmic clank of 62 cylinders—46 hydraulic, 6 pneumatic, and 10 gas-powered.

Inside, the experience is equally enchanting. Passengers can explore an indoor lounge complete with French doors and balconies, or ascend to a terrace via stairways. The machinist narrates the journey, occasionally triggering the elephant’s trumpet-like blast, adding a touch of theatricality to the 30-minute ride.

As this mechanical giant ambles through its three possible itineraries, it not only showcases the beauty of Nantes but also stands as a symbol of the city’s innovative spirit. The Grand Éléphant is more than a ride; it’s a moving piece of art, a testament to the wonders humans can create when they dare to dream big.

For those who seek the extraordinary, riding the Grand Éléphant is an unforgettable journey into the heart of mechanical magic.
