In the heart of Zagreb, a museum like no other stands—a sanctuary for the remnants of love lost. The Museum of Broken Relationships, nestled in the historical Kulmer Palace, houses a collection of objects that once held the weight of someone's world. Each item, from a wind-up toy rabbit to a decapitated teddy bear, tells a story of a relationship that ended but left behind a tangible piece of its history.
Founded in 2010 by artists Olinka Vištica and Dražen Grubišić, the museum began as a traveling exhibition. It was born from the founders' own breakup, a creative response to heartache that invited others to share their stories. Now a permanent fixture in Zagreb, the museum has become an international symbol of emotional catharsis.
Among the exhibits, a garden gnome takes center stage, having soared through the air on the day a twenty-year marriage ended. A stiletto shoe from Amsterdam recalls a childhood romance rekindled decades later. Each artifact, whether a letter from Sarajevo or a golf club from Wagga Wagga, holds a narrative of love and loss, preserved for all to see.
The museum operates daily, offering visitors an emotional journey through the artifacts that speak volumes of human connection and disconnection. As you wander through the halls, you realize that these objects, though ordinary, are imbued with extraordinary stories—each one a testament to the beautiful complexity of relationships.
In the Museum of Broken Relationships, heartbreak becomes art, and the fragments of past loves find a place to be celebrated, not forgotten. It's a place where the echoes of love linger, whispering tales of promises unfulfilled and memories cherished. Here, the ordinary becomes extraordinary, and the broken finds a home.
